Carbon Emissions Data At a Glance

The three tabs display sets of statistics about atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions. "Carbon Production by State" shows details about carbon dioxide emissions for the country as a whole and for each state between 1990 and 2005, the most recent year for which the Department of Energy has statistics. The interactive map shows details on emissions for 2005 by state. "Reducing Carbon Emissions" shows how specific mitigation steps might be expected to reduce projected emissions by 2030.

The line graph shows year-by-year changes in total carbon dioxide production for each state and for the nation as a whole, in millions of metric tons. Mouse over a year on the line graph to see the total for that period in millions of metric tons. The table and pie charts below show both total and per capita carbon dioxide emissions for 2005, and total emissions by user type and fuel type for the nation and for each state.

A December 2007 study by McKinsey & Co. found that various steps could reduce U.S. carbon dioxide emissions by a significant amount. Using an estimated 9,700 million metric tons of emissions, McKinsey's study showed the following ways that emissions might be limited (the forecast predicts a range of reductions):
